OMHA BASE CATEGORY CHANGE BEGINNING 2023-2024

In a motion approved at the 2022 OMHA Annual General Meeting, to accept the outlines determined by the Category Review Committee for the 2023-2024 season, Dorchester Minor Hockey has been recategorized to the base category “A”, beginning for the 2023-2024 season.

This change impacts all representative teams at U10 and above. Currently, DMHA is categorized as “B” for the 2022-2023 season and was categorized as “BB” prior to the 2022-2023 season.

Beginning for the 2023-2024 season, DMHA will offer representative single-age programming as outlined in the below table. Please note, the current number of representative teams (B and C) will not change.  The number of teams for the 2022-2023 season is four B-teams and four C-teams, also shown below:

The move to “A” classification permits all (first entry) representative teams at U12 and above the option to carry up to 3 Non-Resident Passport (NRP) players from other centres. These players can be players released from “AA or above” or players from “below A” that wish to try out with DMHA. NRP players can be accepted or rejected on a per team basis. Note: Policy development in this area is currently taking place.

If future DMHA registration increases, it may necessitate second entry representative teams. In such a scenario, the second entry team(s) would be considered “BB” and would be formed with minor or major aged players (similar to how our teams were formed for the 2022-2023 season).

Other OMHA associations in the area have also been recategorized to “A” and will make up the “A”-loop within the Shamrock Hockey league.  The “A” league membership will be confirmed in early 2023.

Registration for the 2023-2024 season will take place earlier than usual, and some age divisions will have tryouts that take place in the spring.

U5, U6, U7, and U9 programming and Local League programming will not be impacted by this category change (combined age groups will continue to exist for U9-U18). U18 LL will continue to combine 3 age groups.

The DMHA Executive has begun the work to revise the current DMHA By-Laws and DMHA Policies and Procedures to reflect changes that will exist due to changes in OMHA classification.  The DMHA Executive will also review and draft new policies when required.

We will continue to send communications about this process through the coming months. If you have any questions, please send an email to our DMHA Secretary, Katie Haasen at [email protected].
