Playoff hockey returned to Dorchester in dramatic fashion Wednesday night as the U13 Dorchester Dragons hosted the Lucan Irish White at the Flight Exec Centre. With puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on February 25th, the energy in the building was electric for the Dragons’ second game of the round robin—and their first chance to battle Lucan on home ice after a heartbreaking 2–1 loss earlier this season.
First Period – Weathering the Storm
The pregame message from the coaching staff was clear: play with the lead and know how to protect it. But early on, it was the Irish who dictated the pace.
Lucan came out flying, dominating the first half of the opening frame while the Dragons appeared tense under the playoff spotlight. Passes skipped over sticks, clears didn’t connect, and Dorchester spent extended time defending in their own zone.
With 3:31 remaining in the period, Lucan struck first to take a 1–0 lead.
But unlike their previous meeting, the Dragons didn’t sag—they responded.
Just 90 seconds later, Everett Elliott ignited the crowd with a dazzling end-to-end rush. Taking a breakout pass from Xavier Papel deep in the Dragons’ zone, Elliott weaved through traffic and finished with a highlight-reel goal to even the score 1–1. The goal shifted the momentum instantly. From that point forward, it was all Dragons pressure.
Second Period – The Dragons Take Flight
The Dragons needed just 13 seconds in the second period to grab their first lead of the night.
Elliott returned the favour, firing a shot toward the net that Xavier Papel expertly tipped past the Lucan goaltender. Just like that, Dorchester was up 2–1.
The Dragons continued to press. Cameron Gardner nearly extended the lead when his shot deflected off the goalie’s glove and rang sharply off the post. The iron would become a frustrating theme.
Both teams traded two penalties apiece in the middle frame, but neither power play could capitalize. Still, Dorchester carried the play and the confidence into the third.
Third Period – Momentum Swings and Playoff Drama
The Dragons opened the final period the way they ended the second—controlling the offensive zone.
With 10 minutes remaining, Papel struck again. Entering the zone with Elliott on a two-man rush, Papel used his linemate as a decoy before wiring a perfectly placed shot past the Lucan netminder to give the Dragons a 3–1 cushion.
Moments later, Gardner beat the goalie blocker side, only to be denied again by the post. It felt like the game was inches away from being put out of reach.
But playoff hockey is never that simple.
With 6:30 to go, a defensive miscue left a Lucan winger alone in the high slot. The Irish forward made no mistake, going bar down to cut the Dragons’ lead to 3–2.
Still, Dorchester appeared poised to close things out when Lucan took their third penalty of the night with just 1:12 remaining. The Dragons called timeout and set up to run down the clock. In a bold move, the Irish pulled their goalie to create five-on-five pressure while short-handed.
Thirty-one seconds into the advantage, Lucan capitalized on a lost board battle and found an uncovered forward at the side of the net, who tapped home the equalizer to tie the game 3–3.
The Dragons pushed hard in the final 40 seconds but couldn’t find a late winner.
Final Score
Dorchester Dragons 3 – Lucan Irish White 3
A Step Forward
While the Dragons would have loved to secure the full two points, there was a noticeable difference from their earlier meeting in Lucan. Dorchester outplayed the Irish for long stretches, built and protected a lead for most of the night, and demonstrated resilience under pressure.
Growth in playoffs isn’t always measured strictly in wins—it’s measured in response. And Wednesday night, the Dragons showed they are learning.
Post-Game Awards
There was little debate in the dressing room:
- Player of the Game: Xavier Papel – A dominant three-point performance (2 goals, 1 assist), including the go-ahead tally in the third.
- Hardest Worker: Everett Elliott – A momentum-shifting end-to-end goal and a key assist, plus relentless effort all night alongside his linemate.
With four games remaining, the Dragons cling to a narrow lead atop the Group C standings. Their next challenge comes Saturday in Exeter against the similarly unbeaten South Huron Sabres—a showdown that will determine who sits alone at the top of the group.
The fire is lit in Dorchester.
