"THE WALL"

After enduring a 50 minute ride on the disappointment train yesterday, the DRAGONS show up at the Flight Exec Centre today and totally redeem themselves.

While getting their gear on in the dressing room before the game, it was clear in all of their eyes that they were not going to put up with another loss! Today’s battle against Belmont was expected to be a tough won as we had already lost to this team back at the start of November, 6-0. The fans are seated, some with greasy arena food in hand and some just staring at the ice awaiting the beloved DRAGONS to appear. As the DRAGONS filed in one by one, the fans cheered and the warm up began. It was a tight and concise warm up that again led me to believe we were in for one hell of a game.

The buzzer sounded, the kids shook hands, shook the bench staff’s hands and lined up for the face off. The puck dropped and the DRAGONS attacked. The DRAGONS had immediate possession and it stayed this way for the majority of the period. It was only 56 seconds into the first period when the action began. After Belmont is able to briefly clear the puck out of their zone it’s picked up by Ryan “The Rock” Teeple deep in our end. Ryan took look and instantly passed to Logan “The Lion” Kocus. Logan brings the puck through the neutral zone, into Belmont’s end and tips it to Incredible Ian McIntyre just over the blue line. The next few seconds are nothing less than absolute NHL quality by Ian. There are four Belmont players in Ian’s way and he dangles and deeks his way through all of them as though there was no one there. He appears in front of the goalie, but on his off hand. Not wanting to waste the moment, he looks over his shoulder and drills a back hand shot into the top left corner of the net. With 9:04 on the clock, the DRAGONS are up 1-0 for the first time this season! The fans are roaring, the coaches are cheering and the DRAGONS ignite. A similar play took place almost exactly 2 minutes later but with different players involved. On D are Righteous Ryan Hardie and Powerful Peyton Morrissey. Ryan comes out the victor in a battle against the boards, brings it around behind the net and finds Peyton high in the slot. Peyton picks up the pass and off he goes. Skillfully and with great hockey knowledge, Mighty Molly hangs back to cover Peyton, knowing he is on the move. Peyton undresses all 5 Belmont players and comes face to face with the Belmont goalie. With no hesitation, he takes a shot and undresses the 6th Belmont player putting the score at 2-0 DRAGONS! HOLY MACKINAW!!!!!! The arena was like a Dolphins game; the fans on their feet, the bench losing their minds and the other team just staring at their laces. For the next 7 minutes of this period, the play was mostly in Belmont’s end although no more goals were scored by either team. Poor Awesome Adam, our first goalie of the game was rather bored. I think I saw him trying to make snowmen at one point. Finally the buzzer sounds and the exciting first period ends.

The team gathers around the coaches for a few words, but it mostly was a discussion of how proud we were and how well they team is playing TOGETHER this game. The kids are pumped and ready for another period. All I will talk about in this period is that Belmont scores 2 boring lucky goals and takes a dirty 4 minute sin bin stint for intentional head contact.  The period ends at a tie but the DRAGONS are still on fire and not quite done yet.

The buzzer goes off to indicate the third is starting, so the players line up. Appearing for the first time this game is Charlie “The Wall” Williams who is relieving Awesome Adam. With the game tied at 2, the atmosphere is tense and palpable. It is clear both teams wanted the win but it was also clear that one team was the dominant one today. The play was more back and forth this period with Charlie “The Wall” taking some serious heat. Both teams were getting tired but that did not stop them. Three minutes into the period, the play ends up in our zone. Charlie blocks a few hard shots and the last rebound is picked up by Righteous Ryan Hardie. Pulling a true coast-to-coast play, Ryan makes way to Belmont’s blue line. Beside him all way is Danglin’ Daniel Kaiser. Ryan heads just over the blue line and fires off a shot. The Belmont goalie blocks it but the rebound is snagged by Danglin’ Daniel. With the goalie is still down Daniel pulls out his golf moves. He chips the puck up in the air, over the goalie and into the sacred netted space. The crowd goes bananas and so do the players. It is 3-2 for the DRAGONS…. Fantastic …. but the problem is that there is still 11 minutes left on the clock. Can we hold out for the rest of the game? A few more shots were taken by the DRAGONS and unluckily one rang off the post, one was saved and one hit the cross bar and bounced out. The DRAGONS started to weaken slightly but the win was still in their hearts. For the last 3 minutes of the game, the play ended up in our end. Poor Charlie had some important work ahead of him. He must have taken about 15 shots and I mean intense shots, one’s where the rebounds land just in front of the goalie and there are 5 people just digging their buns off to get the rebound in. Standing tall between the pipes, Charlie “The Wall” denies them all. The smile on his face can be seen from the bench. The game never makes it to the intended end because we get curfewed with 4 minutes left on the clock. The kids seem confused but finally understand that the game is over and we won. Everyone heads to the net to celebrate an exciting and well played victory. Player of the game went to Charlie who took the heat for a full non-stop 3 minutes (as well as a full period) and never let a goal in.

Way to go DRAGONS!!!!!!
